Internship opening - Development and Outreach Division
Internship Description: The Development and Outreach Division (“D&O”) of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a full-time intern (35h/week) for its Berlin office starting in February 2015 for three to six months.

The internship will focus on:
• the organization of two large fundraising dinners in Berlin and Frankfurt;
• logistics for various outreach and cultivation events (film screenings, receptions, etc.);
• preparing visits of HRW researchers and advocates;
• creating donor profiles and using the fundraising database;
• researching human rights issues and funding possibilities in Germany;
• assisting in German-English translations; and
• other tasks as assigned

This internship is best suited for those individuals interested in gaining experience in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge and skills in research, database management, event management, and fundraising. In order to provide a valuable and well-rounded internship experience, interns will attend planning and department meetings with staff and will have the opportunity to take advantage of in-house trainings and briefings.

Internships are unpaid. Interns may be provided a small stipend to cover lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications: This position is open to students who are interested in fundraising, outreach, and special events within a human rights context. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, reliable, and flexible. First-rate time-management skills, attention to detail, fluency in German and English, solid writing skills in both languages, and computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications, database) are necessary. Experience with event management or fundraising is desirable. Interns should be available for a period of three to six months starting in February 2015.

How to Apply: Please apply immediately or by 10 December by sending a letter of interest, resume, contact information for two references, and a short writing sample in English or German (no longer than two pages) to devjobs@hrw.org Please use “Internship Development Berlin” as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. No email or phone inquiries, please. Due to the large number of applications, only short-listed candidates will be contacted further.
