International Director - The Black Fish
Position: International Director

Location: Europe, US. Head office in Amsterdam. Some time will have to be spent in Amsterdam, but a part remote-working agreement is possible

Hours: Full-time

As one of the most innovative and cutting-edge organisations tackling illegal fishing, The Black Fish has had an amazing first five years. As a community of dedicated marine conservationists we have achieved more than we could have imagined and built a vast grassroots volunteer network, spanning across Europe and beyond. At the core of the organisation's approach is its Citizen Inspector Network; our flagship, award-winning program that tackles illegal overfishing with a network of trained civilian fishing inspectors.

Now though we are moving onto a new phase. Previously the entire team worked on a volunteer basis with all that that implies. However, due to a very generous core funding grant, we are currently looking to professionalise in all areas. This starts with the recruitment of a new International Director, to help take full advantage of our position as a young, innovative and effective ocean conservation NGO and build on the amazing achievements to date. The money is not enormous, but the opportunity is vast. For the right person, this award-winning, effective and accomplished ocean-defending family could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

If you are driven, strategic and experienced we'd love to hear from you.

Job Description

The overall responsibility for The Black Fish's operational and organisational projects lies with the International Director. The effective implementation of the organisation's overall vision, values and mission are core tasks in this role. You will work with and oversee our Citizen Inspector Network, Volunteer and financial teams as well as representing The Black Fish on an international stage.

You will oversee the initiation and management of all the organisation's projects, including the Citizen Inspector Network, throughout their lifecycle, helping to drive our mission forward and acting to improve the organisation's performance, outcomes and public profile.

With registered charities (or equivalents) in three countries, you will be responsible for making sure these organisations collaborate under The Black Fish banner, whilst carrying out independent projects.

By demonstrating a strong vision and working towards continuous improvement you will drive change and act to develop our organisation's growth to face the challenges ahead. You need to show strong leadership, be confident and decisive, a people's person with strong organisational skills, whilst able to manage your dedicated team in a participatory and inclusive manner.

As an organisation, there are a lot of things we do right and a lot of things we need to work on. Our supporter numbers are massive, but our management of them needs work as does our media outreach and fundraising strategy. Since we started we have been 'flying by the seat of our pants', getting things done with limited budgets and achieving great things, but it's time to get our processes in place and bring structure to our international community of passionate ocean savers. If you believe you are the person to implement these changes, put The Black Fish on the map amongst other major environmental NGOs and lead the organisation into the future, we would love to hear from you.
